兰 · lán

兰 · lán

Character · Stillness

What it means

Orchid — the flower of the scholar, which grows where nobody tends it and is fragrant without being shown.

兰:文人之花。无人打理处自长,香而不自炫。

Where the character comes from

Confucius is said to have rested in an orchid hall and called the space good even though the flowers were wild. That single anecdote is the whole argument of the orchid in Chinese aesthetics: character does not depend on cultivation being visible.

蘭 (traditional) is the full form; 兰 is the simplified one. The classic form carries the 門 radical.

How it gets misread

菊 (chrysanthemum) → 兰 (orchid)

They sit next to each other in the Four Gentlemen. Chrysanthemum is a many-petalled round bloom late in the year; orchid is sparse and vertical.

Before you ink

Long narrow blades in a fan, three or five flowers on a scape. The scent is implied by the pose, not drawn.

Orchid and lotus are both high-brow choices and get swapped in concept art. Lotus sits on a pad on water; orchid grows from the base in a fan.
