What it means
The crane — long life, and the bird that carries the immortals. Longevity, fidelity, and a rank that outlived every dynasty that claimed it.
鹤:长寿,衔仙而居之鸟。长寿、忠贞,以及一种凌驾于所有朝代之上的品级。
Where the character comes from
The crane outlives every court that appointed it: it was a rank badge under the Tang, an emblem of the scholar-recluse under the Song, a messenger of the immortals in the painting that followed. Its place in Chinese art is a question about what lasts.
A pictograph of the bird with its crest; the classical 鶴 preserves the same outline.

How it gets misread
Heron (白鹭) → Crane 鹤
Both are long-necked white wading birds. The crane is larger, dark-crowned, and is the one that stands single-legged in the classical pose.
Before you ink
The red crown is the identifying feature. Without it the drawing collapses into a generic long-necked bird.
Cranes and herons get confused in tattoo work. The crane stands on one leg in the classical pose and has a dark crown and trailing black plumes.
