What it means
The earthly branch for the dragon — and, standing alone, morning: the hour the sky is still half-dark.
辰:龙对应的地支。单用则是「辰时」——天还半亮的那一刻。
Where the character comes from
Of the twelve zodiac animals, the dragon is the only one with no real animal behind it, which is exactly why the earthly branch carries so much weight. 辰 names the dragon, the fifth earthly branch, and the hour before dawn.
A pictograph of a clam shell, used as a measure; by the Zhou it had been borrowed for the fifth earthly branch and its hour.

How it gets misread
龍 (dragon, traditional) → 辰 (the branch)
The design is named 辰龍 so the branch pairing is visible. Dropping 辰 leaves a generic dragon with no zodiac claim.
Before you ink
The zodiac card is named 「辰龙」not 「龙」— the branch pairing is the identity anchor, and it keeps the design clear of the mythical-beasts shelf.
辰 alone is obscure to a non-Chinese reader; 辰龍 together is legible. This is the strongest case on the site for the two-character plate.
